Older Adult Programs Overview

The Jewish Community Center's Older Adult Program, known as "SPICE" (Social, Physical, Intellectual, Cultural and Educational programming), offers a wide range of activities for seniors. The SPICE program is a unique resource for the Jewish community, providing information, involvement, and opportunities for developing new friendships and for welcoming newcomers moving into the Ann Arbor area. It validates the talent and expertise of seniors and welcomes all who want to add some "SPICE" to their life.

Regularly scheduled programming includes exercise, games and crafts, current event discussions and special presentations on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Jewish Community Center. A dairy lunch is offered at these regular weekly meetings. Additionally, health monitoring, information and prevention events such as blood pressure checks, memory screening and immunizations are offered, as are aerobic and strength-training exercise classes.

Periodically, special events such as concerts, classes and trips take place on other days of the week. The SPICE program offers holiday activities, such as a Community Seder for Older Adults and their Families, helping to ensure seniors can continue to celebrate their Jewish heritage. A variety of volunteer activities offer seniors additional ways to socialize and participate in the Jewish community.

The JCC is home to many senior activities that are collaborations with other local organizations. The annual Afternoon Delights series at the JCC features members of the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra. Intergenerational activities are held with the JCC Early Childhood Center and the Hebrew Day School. Additionally the JCC partners with Washtenaw Community College and the University of Michigan's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute to provide a spectrum of classes and seminars.

T JCC helps older adults maintain their independence and enhance their involvement with the community. Geriatric social workers provide case management, assessment, short-term counseling, home visits, crisis intervention, patient advocacy, information, and referrals for older adults and their families. Volunteers provide friendly visiting and medical accompaniment ("Patient Partners") to older adults. JFS also provides services and programming for caregivers of aging loved ones.
